What happens in a Cambridge Murder Mystery Company Event?

What actually happens?

That depends a bit on what you have asked for. We tend to work around your arrangements. However, usually the evening would progress as follows:

Act 1, the meat of the action,  is performed before the first course.

We then leave you to have your first course.

After the first course, the evening gets interactive. You quiz the characters on anything you want to find out about. They will give answers - but not necessarily truthful ones!

During the maincourse, you decide in teams on what you think the solution is, and just before dessert, a member of each team gives their verdict. When all the teams have said who they think it is and why, the murderer is revealed and a prize is given to the team that were closest to the correct answer.

Do you do comedy murder mysteries?

There is always comedy involved, but our plots are written such that the characters will be treating all events as real. Some companies advertise themselves as performing a "Carry On Agatha Christie" style of panto/murder mystery, with comedy French maids and so on. This is not what we do. We prefer to focus on a detailed background that allows you to sleuth as well as have a good time.

How many characters are there in a murder mystery evening?

There are five characters. We have found that this is the perfect number. Fewer and you have to start getting the audience to play parts which not everybody likes. If you have more than that, it starts to get horribly complicated and almost impossible to solve. So we always have five characters - enough to tell a good story and few enough to give the guests a chance of solving the murder if they have picked up on all the right clues and discarded the red herrings.

Will I be given a part to play?

You will need to play along with the show, but not to play an actual character. That is left to the actors. You will be given the chance, however, to interact with the characters during the evening and in the final questioning.

How involved do I have to be?

As much or as little as you want to be. The actors will remain in character at all times. You are free to play along with this as much as you want, but you will not be given a character yourself and we don't force you to do anything you don't want to do. There are usually magic and mentalism tricks which require participation from some of the guests, but again, only those who are willing. We want you to enjoy the evening and we understand that some people love being involved, others like to just watch.

How will we find clues?

Keep your eyes and ears open. The leaflet will contain some clues. Of course, the biggest source of information is the actors. They may not be forthcoming with all the juicy gossip straight away, but don't let up interrogating them. They all have secrets waiting to come out.

Is there only one murderer?

Yes. Your wits will be tested enough with just the one murder without having to cope with more.

Is there only one victim?

Only one person will be killed during the evening, but that doesn't mean that the murderer hasn't killed before. In fact, any of the other characters may have killed before.

Can you kill one of my group?

Sadly no. Our victim and suspects are all played by professional actors. Things would get a bit confusing if the guests got involved with the plot.

Do I have to wear fancy dress?

We don't want to force our guests to do anything they don't want to do. If you would like to, then absolutely do. If you don't want to wear fancy dress, you don't have to.

Do you book the venue?

You will need to book the venue, but we are happy to come to any venue of your choice. For bookings outside the Cambridge area, the fee will be higher to cover transport and the extra time taken.
